Facebook: Remove Trump’s Violent Threats Against Protesters

Target: Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer of Facebook

Goal: Remove Donald Trump’s posts that glorify violence and threaten the American people.

Facebook has taken no action to remove or criticize a post made by President Trump that threatens the American people with violence. The message, aimed at protesters demonstrating around the wrongful death of George Floyd, reads “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

The violent post signaled the beginning of the president’s numerous calls to invoke U.S. military force against protesters. Civil rights activists say that Facebook should follow Twitter’s lead in not supporting content that promotes violence. However, Zuckerberg personally intervened to leave the post up due to the company’s policy to allow warnings of the use of force by state actors.

Many Facebook employees performed a virtual walkout, and at least one employee quit over Zuckerberg’s decision. Allowing the president to post hateful content is setting a dangerous precedent for more violence to ensue across social media platforms. Sign below to demand Zuckerberg remove Trump’s violent post and take a stand against false and hateful content.

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

Facebook is one of the most influential platforms in the world, and therefore it is incredibly important that you take a stand against violence and cease to allow for the propagation and glorification of hateful content.

President Trump’s threat to shoot looters cannot be supported. I demand that you remove Trump’s violent post and take a stand against false and hateful content.
