Save Koalas From Destructive Coal Mine

Target: New South Wales Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock

Goal: Protect koalas that could become extinct as a result of building a coal mine.

Koalas may be killed if they are not granted more stable protections before the Shenhua Watermark coal mine in New South Wales is built. These animals are listed as a vulnerable species and have had to deal with various setbacks, including chlamydia, drought, and bushfires. It is important that whatever possible is done to help make sure koalas thrive.

Land needs to be cleared to proceed with building the mine. However, doing so will greatly destroy the koalas’ habitat. Unfortunately, the koala was not listed as a vulnerable species when the project was first approved by the federal government. Therefore, it may be allowed to proceed without first making sure koalas are adequately protected under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Sadly, an environmental consultant who works for the company found that there were approximately 0.04 koalas occupying each hectare of land. This means that koala populations have declined 87 percent in the area since the years 2012 and 2013.

Although the project will likely be allowed to proceed since koalas were not considered to be a threatened species when the coal mine was first approved, Shenhua could be required to take extra steps to make sure the animals are better protected if it is found they could be more greatly impacted than originally thought. Sign this petition and demand the most protections possible be granted to koalas before the Shenhua Watermark coal mine is built so that they will be less likely to become locally extinct.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Hancock,

It is possible that koalas in New South Wales will die out more quickly if arrangements are not made to better protect them before the Shenhua Watermark coal mine project starts. Koalas are already struggling because of bushfires, droughts, and chlamydia. These animals must be granted the most protections possible so that they can successfully survive in the wild.

Many trees would have to be chopped down before the mining project was able to start. Since koalas live in these trees, cutting them down would put them at risk of getting run over by cars, attacked by dogs and even falling and drowning in pools. An environmental consultant found that koala populations have declined 87 percent since 2012 and 2013, clearly indicating that more needs to be done to make sure the koalas in this area do not become extinct.

Even though this mining project is likely to proceed since koalas were not found to be in as much danger when the coalmine was first authorized to be built, it is crucial that the people in charge of this project take more precautions to make sure koalas are better protected. We therefore demand that the Shenhua Group be required to do whatever necessary to make sure impact on these animals is minimal before being allowed to proceed with this project.

Sincerely,

save the precious beautiful koalas!!!!! they are precious and are deserving of a life and stop cutting down trees before checking if any koalas are in them!!!! I was so depressed and upset all summer for all the deaths of the beautiful koalas!!! If I could of I would of gone and saved some!! I adopted one and am going to adopt some more to help pay for costs to look after them and I gave to plant some trees, and gave a few hundred in donations, what I could. Koalas are so beautiful and amazing and not expendable!!! nor is any animal!!!

Ms. Shelley Hancock. Coal makes millions and koalas hardly even make a sound. Coal is dead matter but koalas are alive, just like you and I. If we were to look at if from a true human being point of view, which do you think that would have preference when making a decision? You should review the current COVID-19 pandemic event if you have any doubts.
