Target: Randall H. Tippins, Sheriff of Evans County, GA
Goal: Fire sheriff’s deputy charged with killing unarmed black Muslim man who may have been suffering from mental illness.
An unarmed Sudanese-American man who may have been suffering from mental illness was allegedly shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia. Yassin Mohamed was allegedly throwing rocks at the officer, who reportedly responded with lethal force.
The sheriff’s department was presumably aware of Yassin Mohamed’s questionable mental state, as the man had recently been hospitalized for a mental health assessment following a separate encounter with law enforcement. Nevertheless, rather than apply the resources or tactics appropriate for a mental health crisis, the sheriff’s deputy allegedly responded with gunfire. Demand that the Evans County Sheriff’s Department fire the deputy who reportedly shot this unarmed man.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Sheriff Tippins,
Your deputy allegedly shot and killed an unarmed man who had recently been hospitalized for a mental health assessment. At the time of his shooting, Yassin Mohamed was reportedly throwing rocks at the officer — an act that seems closer to a taunt than a life-threatening attack — when the deputy allegedly responded with lethal force.
While assaulting an officer is a crime, it is not punishable by death. Lethal force should be the last resort of any professional who has sworn to serve and protect. I demand that you fire the deputy who allegedly showed such reckless disregard for the life of an unarmed man.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
