Don’t Put Flood Victims’ Health at Risk Because of Politics

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Do not defund Michigan as it deals with natural disasters and dire health threats.

President Trump has threatened to defund Michigan over a political disagreement, putting countless lives in danger following a devastating 500-Year Flood. Dam failures unleashed raging waters that swallowed entire communities and left thousands without a safe place to land. The turmoil is far from over for these survivors, however. Their long-term health is at risk due to the ongoing pandemic and the potential exposure to toxins brought about by the flooding. Now more than ever, Michigan needs the president’s support.

Dirty dealer Dow Chemical, which spent decades dumping harmful toxins into nearby Michigan rivers and surrounding environments, has been cleaning up its mess for eight years. The unprecedented flooding, however, has stirred the dangerous sediment still left behind. Worse yet, the waters could breach containment systems at Dow’s facilities and unleash even more birth defect-causing, deadly substances onto vulnerable populations. Combine this imminent danger with the challenges of ensuring displaced citizens remain safe from COVID-19, and the chances for a public health calamity are alarmingly high.

Yet while this state faces an immediate crisis that places so many of its citizens in peril, the president of the United States is busy threatening to withhold desperately needed funding because of politics. President Trump does not approve of giving citizens the option to protect themselves and their right to vote in the midst of a viral outbreak. Michigan, on the other hand, has championed mail-in voting. Apparently, the president thinks punishing and endangering the entire state because of a political disagreement is behavior befitting a national leader.

Sign this petition to demand public health and peoples’ lives come before partisan political squabbles.

Dear President Trump,

Dams broke in Michigan. People lost their homes. Entire communities are submerged. At any moment, the 500-Year Flood could overrun a chemical facility and unleash toxic materials that sicken and kill people across the landscape.

You may not like the governor. You may disagree with mail-in voting. None of this matters when the lives of so many people—and future voters—are on the line.

Put them first. Ensure Michigan receives the funds it will need to recover from this ongoing disaster.
