Trump: Don’t Damage Foreign Relations with Treaty Withdrawal

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Stop withdrawal from Open Skies treaty, which helps strengthen foreign relations with many allies.

President Donald Trump has indicated that he intends for the United States to exit the Open Skies Treaty, a nearly twenty year-old agreement that lets countries perform unarmed reconnaissance over each other’s countries. It is seen by many as an important part of transparency between nations, and strengthens many of our relationships around the globe.

The indication that it is unnecessary to spend $125 million to replace aging aircraft used for treaty verification is absurd. This is not only a very small percentage of the overall defense budget, but the money has already been appropriated for this by Congress. It is not a new expenditure. Sign our petition and tell the President of the United States that our relationship with other countries is too important to withdraw from this treaty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

Withdrawing from the Open Skies treaty to save a comparatively minuscule amount of money is not a good enough reason to potentially damage our relations with other countries. Transparency on a foreign policy level is critical to maintaining our friendships abroad, something that keeps us at peace and eases tensions.

The middle of the pandemic is not the time to making drastic changes to foreign policy in general, but especially changes that may hurt our relationship with other countries around the globe. Stop this withdrawal and maintain our current agreement to continue to foster friendly relationships with other nations.

Sincerely,

[ Your Name Here ]
