Expand Family Medical Leave Protection for At-Risk Families During Pandemic

Target: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Congresswoman from New York

Goal: Expand family medical leave protections for workers with high risk family members.

Workers who decide to stay home during the COVID-19 pandemic should not have to worry about losing their jobs, especially if they have high risk family members at home. The Family Medical Leave Act currently protects employees for up to 12 weeks if they are staying home because they are sick, or are taking care of someone who is. It needs to be expanded to also include staying home during a pandemic to prevent possibly bringing home the virus to someone who is high risk.

No one should have to worry about losing their job because they need to stay home to prevent possibly losing a family member. The overall mortality rate of COVID-19 is extreme, and it is far worse for those with pre-existing conditions like obesity, asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Sign below and tell Representative Ocasio-Cortez to push for these protections in the next Coronavirus bill.

Dear Representative Ocasio-Cortez,

You make working class people of this country a priority in your role as Congresswoman, and we need your help again.

The Family Medical Leave Act currently protects employees for up to twelve weeks if they are staying home from work for medical reasons, or to take care of a family member. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this needs to be expanded to protect the jobs of those who decide to stay home to prevent potentially infecting at-risk family members.

If your mom has emphysema or one of your kids is asthmatic, you shouldn’t have to worry about having no job to go back to if you stay home to protect their lives. Make expanding the Family Medical Leave Act a priority.

  1. Apparently nobody bothered to read the petition…maybe it would help if y’all understood that you pay SICK PAY to those workers are SICK…why would someone who’s not sick get sick pay???

Such qualified medical and family reasons may include adoption, pregnancy, foster care placement, family or personal illness, or military leave.
