Protect Women and Girls From Domestic Violence During Lockdown

Target: László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary

Goal: Demand Hungarian government reverse their rejection of important domestic violence bill.

The Hungarian parliament made the decision not to ratify the Istanbul convention against violence against women, putting thousands of women and girls across the country at risk. During the coronavirus crisis, instances of domestic abuse have doubled as a consequence of the lockdown.

“This not only puts women and girls at risk but sends a damaging message to perpetrators that their acts will not be prosecuted,” says David Vig, Amnesty International’s Hungary Director. Worse, the parliament is calling all social concerns regarding their decision “political whining” while accusing the Istanbul convention of “supporting illegal migration” and “prescribing dangerous gender ideologies.” In truth, the parliament is deflecting its own shortcomings concerning violence against women onto an act that could save thousands of lives.

We cannot allow Hungary to belittle the plight of abused women and girls, especially during a time like this. Sign this petition to demand the parliament reverse their decision immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Kövér,

The decision of the Hungarian parliament to reject the Istanbul convention is extremely dangerous. Thousands of women and girls across Hungary are victims of domestic violence, with the number of cases doubling during the coronavirus lockdown. Refusing to ratify the convention not only increases the risk to girls and women, but teaches perpetrators that their behavior is acceptable. Worse, reports state that your response to social concerns is to write them off as “political whining.”

This is completely unacceptable. Not only are you allowing domestic abuse cases to rise, but your lack of concern for the victims is appalling. You must reverse your rejection of the Istanbul convention immediately, and improve the country’s track record of handling domestic abuse cases. Girls and women deserve better than this.

Sincerely,
