Stop Racist “Zoom-Bombers” From Hijacking Video Chats

Hacker - Christoph Scholz

Target: Eric Yuan, CEO of Zoom

Goal: Commit to preventing hateful, racist cyber attacks from “Zoom-bombers”

A virtual graduation ceremony was hijacked by a racist hacker who flashed a swastika and called out racial slurs in front of 650 students and family members. The seniors of Oklahoma City University, unable to hold a traditional ceremony because of the coronavirus, were coming together to celebrate via Zoom when the hacker took over their screens with this hateful message.

“Zoom-bombers” are not uncommon on the now widely used video chat platform, and this isn’t the first time a virtual event has been hijacked for the purpose of hate speech. Sign below and demand that Zoom act quickly and effectively to ensure the safety of the thousands of individuals, families, schools, churches, and businesses that use its service.

Dear Mr. Yuan,

Since the COVID-19 outbreak has moved virtually all interactions online, your product’s popularity has skyrocketed. This doesn’t just mean soaring profits, however; it means that Zoom has a new and crucial responsibility to provide safe, secure access to communication services for thousands of consumers.

“Zoom-bombers” aren’t just annoying; they can be hateful, racist, and verbally abusive, like the hacker who hijacked Oklahoma City University’s virtual graduation. I demand that your company take immediate action to improve its security and protect its customers, who deserve to celebrate graduations, chat with their families, attend business meetings, and go to church without suffering such vicious attacks.
