Protect the Hard-Won Rights of LGBTQ+ People and Women

Target: Mike Pompeo, United States Secretary of State

Goal: Reject government report if it recommends violating LGBTQ+ and women’s rights.

The Commission on Unalienable Rights, a group formed by the U.S. State Department in July 2019, is due to release a report that could forfeit the rights of LGBTQ+ people and women. This commission gives recommendations on human rights in foreign policy and it is staffed by a number of people known to have made derogatory or hateful remarks about these communities. When Mike Pompeo announced the commission’s formation, he cited what he saw as an excessive number of human rights complaints across the world as motivation, saying of these efforts that “things that we all know as Christian believers aren’t part of the inherent dignity of a human being became rights.”

Pompeo has argued that the commission should reexamine widely-recognized rights for gay and transgender people as well as women if they were found to conflict with the original text of the Constitution. Numerous human rights groups have argued that this could effectively cancel the significant advances made in human rights in preceding decades, as well as hindering any future progress.

The U.S. government has no right to redefine human rights on its own. Sign the petition below to demand that the State Department recognize that all nations have a say in the fair treatment of humans and reject this report if it conflicts with human dignity.

Dear Secretary Pompeo,

The Commission on Unalienable Rights has been encouraged since its formation to reject positive changes in rights for women and LGBTQ+ people, providing your administration with legal excuses to attack the dignity and safety of vulnerable groups.

If the Commission’s report recommends any such violations, it is your duty to the people of the United States and the world to reject it. Our fellow citizens cannot be attacked simply for being different.
