Stop the Rapid Spread of Covid-19 in Tribal Communities

Target: Alex M. Azar II, Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services

Goal: Collect and report racial demographic data for Native Americans in order to adequately address Covid-19.

Native Americans are at higher risk of death from the novel coronavirus due to being ignored by the American government. Native Americans are being left out racial demographic data on the impact of coronavirus. Tribal members fear that the effects of Covid-19 on their population will go largely unnoticed, resulting in a severe lack of proper resources to slow the spread.

An analysis by The Guardian found that almost 80 percent of U.S. state health departments have released some racial data, revealing a stark disparity in Covid-19 infection rates and deaths among black and LatinX communities. Of those states, though, almost half did not include data for Native Americans. Instead, they were marked as ‘other.’ In states that do categorize them, the data indicates disproportionately high infection and death rates.

Senator Elizabeth Warren joined others to introduce a bill requiring the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to consult with tribal governments on federal data collection and provide three million dollars to the Indian Health Service. Sign below to demand the HHS collect racial data for Native Americans so that they can adequately fight the spread of Covid-19.

Dear Secretary Azar II,

Native Americans are being left out of coronavirus data collection. With the little data that has been provided, stark disparities in infection and death rates are shown.

In order to protect Indigenous peoples from the spread of Covid-19, I demand that you work with tribal governments to collect and report coronavirus data for Native Americans.
