Don’t Allow Coal Mine to Pollute Air and Endanger Health

Target: Alok Sharma, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Goal: Veto approval for coal mine that would produce three million-plus tons of air pollutants.

At a time when the world is battling an enemy that relentlessly attacks respiratory systems, the United Kingdom (UK) is considering greenlighting a new project that would further put citizens at risk by compromising the very air they breathe. If given the go-ahead by UK’ ministers, a proposed opencast coal mine would become the largest in the region. It would also produce an estimated three million tons of coal that will quickly be converted into dangerous pollutants.

The fossil fuels most directly responsible for climate change have already benefitted globally from massive bailouts and loosened restrictions during the pandemic. Meanwhile, investment in green energy—a boon for both environmental and public health– has largely fallen by the wayside. The UK can set an important precedent by using this opportunity to put its support not behind a toxic relic of the past but towards a healthier, cleaner future.

Sign this petition to urge UK leaders to make the best choice for its lands and citizens.

Dear Mr. Sharma,

UK leadership has vowed to end the years-long battle over a new opencast coal mine by making a decision about this project’s future. Please carefully weigh the long-term impact of this choice. During a time of such global upheaval, a seemingly regional decision will send an important message to the entire world.

Coal is a finite substance. Continued dependence on this resource at the expense of better alternatives will ultimately hurt the UK. While coal is limited in supply, its crushing effects will linger for decades, and perhaps centuries. Think about the sheer amount of toxic carbon emissions the estimated three million tons of opencast coal will unleash into the air….the air we need to be clean and healthy now more than ever. Do not create a chronic foe of respiratory systems at a time when a respiratory virus is ravaging the planet.

Invest in the future. Say “no” to the opencast coal mine and “yes” to clean, green energy.
