Target: Vice President Joe Biden
Goal: Show support for the Vice President as he attempts to promote his administration’s campaign to require background checks for gun purchases.
Vice President Joe Biden recently traveled down to Virginia to give a lengthy talk on his administration’s gun control proposal. At the heart of the proposal is a campaign to require background checks for firearm purchases, which would help to ensure that only qualified citizens would be able to possess such deadly devices. Biden should be supported for proposing this plan, which would greatly increase public safety across the country.
The plan that the administration has on the table also includes an increase in the number of policemen employed across the country; Biden and his group believe in adding an extra 15,000 policemen through the COPS program. The issues that have gotten most press coverage on a federal level have been the administration’s insistence on banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines from public use, but lately Biden has been publicly pushing the background check measures far more emphatically than anything else.
Such measures would keep guns away from the exact kind of people that end up using them for destructive purposes: namely, those who are not qualified to be entrusted with the responsibility to own such deadly weapons. When one person sells another person a firearm, it should be absolutely clear that the purchaser is up to the task of responsibly owning, handling, and operating the weapon. As recent current events have shown, the system in place has not been good enough at keeping guns only in responsible hands.
There has been considerable public outcry from the pro-gun contingent that these various gun control measures are a Constitutional violation and are denying people their rights. But just as citizens have the right to bear arms, they have the responsibility to bear arms responsibly; nobody could possibly argue against that. Therefore, Biden’s background check proposal deserves to be made into a law. The Vice President deserves the support of the American people in his battle to require more thorough gun control.
Dear Vice President Biden,
Your gun control proposal is an example of positive progressive legislation that, to paraphrase President Obama’s second inauguration speech, values principle over absolutism. It represents the kind of thinking that needs to happen more often among influential world leaders.
Creating mandatory background checks for firearm purchases would limit the amount of gun owners in the country simply to the most qualified people possible, and this would significantly reduce the risk of a major tragedy occurring. Had background checks been required for firearm purchase and ownership from the start of the year 2012, who knows what differences could have been made. Enforcing them for the future would representative a great advancement in public safety.
Yet, your proposal is still being met with much conflict, especially from the pro-gun contingent.
This letter is a letter of encouragement: encouragement to you to keep your principles strong and keep fighting the good fight to get this proposal turned into legislation. We need our country to become a safer place; your gun control proposal, if turned into law, would greatly help in achieving that goal. Stay strong and don’t back down, Mr. Vice President.
