Don’t Bail Out Coal Company That Pollutes Developing Nations

Target: Hong Nam-ki, Minister of Economy and Finance, South Korea

Goal: End bailout plans for South Korean coal giant Doosan.

The government of South Korea has announced their intention to grant international coal company Doosan 1 trillion won ($825 million USD) to help them avoid bankruptcy, in a move which could endanger the lives of millions in South and Southeast Asia due to air and water pollution. Government officials have claimed that this is intended to offset damage caused by COVID-19, but critics say that the company has been in financial straits long before the recent pandemic.

Doosan makes 80% of its profits from coal-fired power plants in developing Asian countries where air pollution regulations are looser and public health systems are less supportive. Calls have been made for the company’s bailout to be dependent on transitioning away from coal. However, Doosan’s leadership has made statements that they intend to maximize coal profits before any such move is made.

No corporation deserves assistance without meeting the needs of the public or considering the environment. Sign the letter below to demand that the South Korean government hold this dangerous and irresponsible company to account.

Dear Mr. Hong,

The decision to grant a 1 trillion won bailout to Doosan, a known polluter of countries all over Southeast Asia, is irresponsible both to the people of South Korea and to global efforts to fight climate change. Doosan has no right to expect financial assistance if they continue to insist on building coal-fired power plants which damage the environment and threaten the health of millions of people.

I demand that you withhold aid from this company until they commit to ending their involvement in dangerous and unhealthy coal projects.
