Don’t Slash the Wages of Already Vulnerable Farm Workers

Target: Sonny Perdue, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture

Goal: Don’t slash the wages of essential farm workers during the coronavirus.

Foreign born farm workers are being threatened with wage cuts under the guise of helping American farmers. These farm workers are already paid very low wages, forced to live in cramped housing and denied a path to citizenship, all while being deemed “essential” during the coronavirus crisis.

This wage cut, proposed by The White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and the United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, is supposed to help farmers who are struggling due to major disruptions in the agricultural supply chain during the Covid-19 crisis.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, farm workers earned 24,620 dollars per year as of 2018, which is below the federal poverty line for a family of four. Erik Nicholson, vice president of United Farm Workers, says that workers have reported a lack of proper handwashing stations and are still being forced to live in cramped housing, despite the threat of Covid-19. Sign below to demand Perdue find another way to help farmers that does not involve slashing the wages of our farm workers, who are the backbone of American food security.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Perdue,

Foreign born farm workers continue to be monumentally undervalued. They work long hours, are forced to live in cramped housing, receive very low pay, and are denied a path to citizenship. During the Covid-19 crisis, they are deemed “essential” and are putting their life on the line everyday.

Our country relies on these workers for survival. I demand that you do not slash the wages of our valuable farm workers.

Sincerely,
