Overturn Hong Kong’s Face Mask Ban During Coronavirus

Target: Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong

Goal: Overturn oppressive face mask ban during the Covid-19 crisis.

The Hong Kong Court of Appeals upheld a face mask ban despite the threat of Covid-19. The ban was put in place in October during widespread anti-government protests. However, Hong Kong residents, like millions globally, turn to masks for essential protection from the coronavirus.

Health experts and concerned citizens have called for face masks to be made mandatory. However, the Court of Appeals partially overturned a lower court ruling that a ban on face masks was unconstitutional, saying that the ban is permitted during a time of “public danger.” According to activist Leung Kwok-Hung, “The definition of ‘public danger’ is too wide, it will allow the chief executive to abuse his or her power in order to avoid ordinary people from exercising their basic rights such as freedom of assembly or freedom of speech.”

While the ruling permitted use of face masks for health, religious, or job-related reasons, critics say this could cause confusion. Police are still allowed to demand mask removal. Sign below to demand Hong Kong’s chief executive overturn the face mask ban in order to protect citizens from the threat of Covid-19.

Dear Ms. Lam,

The citizens of Hong Kong face an imminent threat to their health due to the Covid-19 crisis. Millions of global citizens have turned to face masks in order to help prevent the risk of infection. It is unconstitutional that residents of Hong Kong cannot comfortably wear a mask without fear of police intervention.

In order to protect Hong Kong citizens, I demand that you overturn the face mask ban and make masks mandatory in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

  1. Maybe this is the justice for the way they treat animals. Now they are being treated the same way.

  2. The “public danger” is from NOT wearing a mask.
