End Program that Puts Vulnerable Asylum Seekers in More Danger

Target: Donald J. Trump, President of the United States

Goal: End the “safe third country” deal that sends vulnerable migrants to countries that suffer from the same gang violence and poverty as the countries they are fleeing from.

A new plan implemented by the Trump administration, “safe third country”, is putting Central American migrants on planes to “seek asylum” in Guatemala, without telling them where they are going or what they should do when they arrive. The United Nations, along with several other human rights organizations, have many concerns about the plan’s implementation and believe that it does not offer a safe alternative to returning home or attempting to cross the U.S. border again.

Many migrants from Honduras and El Salvador who have attempted to claim asylum at the U.S. border report being rejected and then put on a plane without being told where they are going. Upon arriving in Guatemala City, they receive little information about what applying for asylum in one of Latin America’s poorest countries actually entails, and are forced to make a decision within minutes. If they do not immediately decide to apply for asylum, they are required to leave the country within 72 hours. Because migrants are given such little information, the program has not proven effective. Of the 143 Hondurans and Salvadorans sent to Guatemala since the program began in December, only five have applied for asylum.

The “safe third country” deal is very problematic given that Guatemala suffers from the same conditions that migrants are fleeing from in their home countries; violence initiated by the MS-13 gang and extreme poverty. Guatemala has poor economic and physical security for its own citizens, let alone for a slew of new migrants. Thousands of Guatemalan citizens are trying to migrate themselves. In the fiscal year of 2019, they made up the largest source of migrants detained at the U.S. border.

Sending asylum seekers to Guatemala City is not a safe solution. Sign below to demand the Trump administration end the “safe third country” deal.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

Your “safe third country” deal is merely another dramatic attempt to curb migration and reject asylum seekers by making the public believe that migrants are being sent somewhere “safe.” However, Guatemala is not a safe option for refugees. Guatemala shares all of the same dangerous conditions that these migrants are fleeing from in their home countries; gang violence, extortion and extreme poverty.

It is cruel and inhumane to send vulnerable migrants to Guatemala without telling them where they are going or how to apply for asylum. This cannot continue. I demand that you treat asylum seekers like human beings and end the “safe third country” deal.

Sincerely,

  1. Refugees are people seeking refuge from war torn countries. These illegals are breaking our LAWS by sneaking into our nation unverified! America is the country of immigrants but the immmigrants come here legally like I did! Either come here legally or don’t come and disrespect our laws, our citizens and our President. I SUPPORT PRESIDENT TRUMP 100%. Shame on democrats for not upholding our laws!

Thanks for reading! I encourage you to research ICE records and other statistics. Turns out most of the immigrants held in detention centers did not try and cross illegally, they asked for asylum at the border and are now being detained. Categorizing all individuals who apply for asylum as criminals is statistically false, unfortunately.
