Prevent Climate Change by Halting Damaging Natural Gas Burnoff

Target: Wayne Christian, Chairman of the Railroad Commission of Texas

Goal: Prevent climate change by bringing an end to excessive natural gas flaring.

Natural gas flaring flaring emitted more than 350 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air last year. That is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of 75 million cars. This wasteful practice used by the oil and gas industry, has significantly increased in the state of Texas. Natural gas flaring is a significant contributor to rising temperatures.

Natural gas flaring is the intentional burning of natural gas, practiced either because pipelines aren’t located close enough to a well to transport the gas or because gas prices are are so low that it is cheaper to discard the gas. Often, oil and gas companies drill faster than they can transport, making it cheaper to flare.

The Railroad Commission of Texas, who approves permits to flare, is being sued by a pipeline operating company, Williams MLP Operating LLC, over an accused pattern of “needless” flaring. The Wall Street Journal reported last year that the Railroad Commission has approved every flaring request that has been presented to them since 2007. According to the commission’s figures, 158 requests were approved in 2009 compared to the nearly 7,000 approved in the latest fiscal year. This large and blatant increase in natural gas flaring is concerning given the state of our environment today. Sign below to demand the Railroad Commission of Texas stop issuing an excessive number of permits to flare based on economic advantage.

Dear Mr. Christian,

The Railroad Commission of Texas has issued an excessive number of permits to flare. This is contradictory to your previous track record of frequently prohibiting natural gas flaring based on known negative impacts to the environment.

Flaring is incredibly wasteful and harmful to the environment. You cannot justify allowing oil and gas companies to spew more carbon dioxide into the air based on economic advantage.

I demand that you prioritize the health of our planet by significantly decreasing natural gas flaring and issuing permits only when absolutely necessary.
