Prosecute Anti-Vaxxer Mom Whose 4-Year-Old Reportedly Died of Common Flu

Target: Michelle Barnes, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Human Services

Goal: Seek prosecution for anti-vaxxer mom whose child reportedly died of the flu.

A four-year-old boy in Colorado died of the flu after his mother reportedly refused to fill a prescription for Tamiflu. Instead, the mother apparently sought the advice and counsel of the members of the Facebook group “Stop Mandatory Vaccination.” This group is one of the largest anti-vaccination groups on Facebook and is notorious for spreading conspiracies about vaccinations, the government’s health agenda, and modern medicine. Much of the information being spread in this group about vaccines is not supported by medical or scientific evidence.

In this particular case, the four-year-old boy was part of a household where two out of four children were already positively diagnosed with the flu. When a doctor wrote a prescription for Tamiflu, the most common antiviral medication prescribed to treat the illness, the mom reportedly wrote, “The doc prescribed tamiflu but I did not pick it up.” In response to this post, there were 45 comments from other members. However, not one of the comments suggested that the mother seek medical attention despite the fact that the mother wrote that “natural cures” for flu were not working. She was allegedly attempting to treat the flu with peppermint oil, Vitamin C, and lavender. The comments suggested she also try breastmilk, thyme, and elderberry. Not one of these suggestions is backed by medical professionals.

The child was eventually taken to the hospital and died four days later. Sign this petition to urge the Colorado Department of Human Services to seek prosecution for the mother’s apparent negligence.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Barnes,

When a child is sick, they are completely at the mercy of their parent or guardian. Recently, a four-year-old boy died at the hands of his seemingly negligent, anti-vaxxer mother when she refused to follow a medical doctor’s advice to use Tamiflu to treat the flu. Instead, she reportedly turned to Facebook to seek advice when her “natural cures” of peppermint oil, Vitamin C, and lavender were not curing her child. The group suggested that she try breastmilk, thyme, and elderberry. Not one of these “natural cures” is backed by medical science; not one commenter suggested she seek further medical attention.

The boy was eventually admitted to the hospital and died four days later. This was an absolutely preventable death that seemingly occurred only because of the mother’s own ill-informed beliefs. I urge you to seek prosecution for the apparent negligence of this parent.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
