Combat Animal Cruelty With Harsher Legal Standards and Consequences

Target: Tate Reeves, Governor of Mississippi

Goal: Pressure Mississippi government to enact stricter standards and definitions in animal cruelty cases.

Mississippi has the weakest animal protection laws, according to a recent news report. The state’s negligence includes but is not limited to a lack of felony or abandonment provisions, poor definitions or standards for basic animal care, no mandatory reporting for suspected animal cruelty, and poor definitions of sexual assault against animals.

This is beyond unacceptable, absolutely horrifying. Animal cruelty has been a serious problem in the United States for decades, but despicable incidents of bestiality, slaughter, neglect, and hoarding have run rampant across the country for the past several years. Other states have cracked down on such things, and the president himself recently signed a law making animal abuse a crime, but Mississippi still remains lax in its protection of innocent creatures.

We cannot let this continue. The laws forbidding animal cruelty must be strong and equal in every state, and Mississippi must comply. Sign this petition to pressure the state’s government to tighten its animal protection laws.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Reeves,

Your state’s weak animal protection laws are absolutely unacceptable. Recent reports show that Mississippi has the weakest standards for animal care and definitions of sexual assault, no mandatory reporting for suspected animal cruelty, and many more problems that put millions of innocent animals at risk for cruelty and neglect.

You must rectify this immediately. Such lax laws and regulations reduce animals to lesser beings, regarding them as expendable and less worthy of protection. They are living creatures, and they deserve better than this. With animal abuse laws tightening across the country as well as the president’s signing of a law making animal abuse a crime, Mississippi must fall in line and increase protection for animals.

Sincerely,

  1. This needs attention and correction

    • Animal cruelty is now officially banned across the United States, as President Trump has signed the federal document. The recognition of the link between cruelty to animals and crimes against humans played a major role in this ban.

  2. Mahatma Gandhi once said that “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” I would suggest that applies for states too.
