Keep Russian Child Cancer Hospital Open

Target: Russia President Vladimir Putin

Goal: Keep children’s cancer Hospital No. 31 open

Recently, the Russian government announced plans to close St. Petersburg’s Hospital No. 31. This hospital has been one of the top hospitals in the city, and has a children’s oncology ward that treats over a third of children’s cancer cases in the country. The hospital is important to many of its patients, who would not be able to travel to another hospital for care which may not be on par with that at Hospital No. 31. There is outrage in the St. Petersburg community because of this news, as well as the decision that the hospital will be repurposed to care for government officials instead of the public.

The hospital has a history of treating patients that other hospitals cannot or will not treat. If the hospital is closed to these patients, many of them will not be able to receive treatment at another hospital. The children’s oncology ward, which treats 40 percent of pediatric cancer cases in Russia, is the only ward of this specialty in the region. If this ward closes, the children it treats will not be able to continue to receive care. The families of these children are especially worried for the future if Hospital No. 31 closes.

Plans for the hospital include transferring the closed facilities to care specifically for government officials. This is causing a lot of outrage among those living in St. Petersburg, who feel their children are being ignored in favor of these officials. The children who need this hospital should not be considered less important than government officials, and should be allowed to continue to receive medical care.

Dear President Putin,

Recently, plans were announced to close St. Petersburg’s Hospital No. 31 to the general public. The plan would restrict access of medical care to government officials. This hospital is currently the only one in the region that is able to provide care for child cancer patients. Closing this hospital will mean these children will not be able to continue receiving care.

I ask you to keep Hospital No. 31 open. The patients of this hospital will have trouble finding care, and many will not be able to continue to receive it. Government officials have much more freedom to access medical care and should not be taking it away from children with cancer. Keep Hospital No. 31 open and allow its patients to continue receiving medical care.
