Protect Pets From Convicted Animal Abusers

Target: Cameron Sexton, Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives

Goal: Make it illegal for convicted animal cruelty offenders to own pets.

Animals remain vulnerable to abuse and neglect as long as they are allowed to be placed with convicted animal cruelty offenders, as is currently the case in Tennessee. Tell lawmakers to take a stand against animal cruelty.

A cat killed by an alleged stalker, another cat reportedly murdered for playing with a Christmas tree, a dog thrown from an overpass: these are just some of the cases of animal cruelty that have recently made headlines in Tennessee. Imagine placing dogs, cats, or other domesticated animals with those found responsible for these crimes. At best this puts them in a position of vulnerability and at worst it could mean the horrifying death of that animal.

Current Tennessee law allows for convicted animal cruelty offenders to own pets, but recently proposed legislation aims to outlaw this practice for at least two years post-conviction. This move is just one in succession of several that are making Tennessee harder on animal cruelty offenders, beginning when they became the first state to create a registry for those convicted of aggravated animal cruelty. Sign below and demand that lawmakers support this ban on pet ownership and continue this trend towards animal welfare.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Sexton,

Many animal cruelty victims have suffered due to Tennessee’s previously imperfect animal cruelty legislation. That has improved with proposed harsher penalties for animal cruelty offenders and the creation of an animal abuse registry. Now, thanks to Rep. Darren Jernigan, your state could take another bold stand against animal cruelty and protect domesticated animals of all kinds from abuse and neglect.

House Bill 1643 aims to make it illegal for previously convicted animal cruelty offenders to own pets for at least two years post-conviction. This would protect innocent animals from those already deemed capable of serious harm. This is an important move in the right direction. I demand that you show support for this legislation and protect Tennessee’s domesticated animals.

Sincerely,

  1. It’s HORRIFYING that the state of Tennessee allows convicted scumbag animal torturers to own pets!!! Would you give CHILDREN to criminal abusers!!?? Animals are like children, INNOCENT and TOTALLY DEFENSELESS in the hands of SADISTIC, PSYCHOPATHIC and DEHUMANIZED sadists! The State of Tennessee MUST also make LEGISLATION and PENALTIES considerably HARSHER than the case is today! SHAME!! SHAME!! SHAME and DISGRACE on the state of Tennessee for its UNPARDONABLE FAILURE to PROTECT animals against mishandling at the hands of mentally-sick SUBHUMAN SCUM!

    • Martha Mcclain says:

The best predictor of future behavior IS PAST behavior. Plain and simple those sickos do not deserve to own another animal to abuse and ot kill!!! Wake up!

    • Wow!!! Very well said. And I agree!!

    • Terri Manabe says:

Very well put Urzula and I too agree 110%. I can’t imagine who the lame ass idiot is that came up with this one, but apparently they don’t give a shit about dogs ot cats. Stiffer penalties, actual jail/prison time for abuse or murder of animals. Criminals are treated too damn soft with our laws and this is why they keep repeating their offenses. If you don’t make them scared enough when they are found guilty, they will just keep going in and out of jail. And this is a known fact. No more pussy footing around with criminals, stop making victims suffer more than the criminals when there is a trail. As far as animals we are their voices since they can’t speak for themselves.

  2. Sherry Norris says:

This has always been a sickening crime! Why has it taken so long and do they really need a petition signed? This world is so twisted! Just like when someone murders someone… Why are they allow to live their lives in jail? They should be sentence to death! Sick people who hurt any living being should severely punished!!! And the people who leave their pets outside in the bitter cold with iron chain!!!! Should be treated the same for be heartless!!!!

  3. Maria Bertrand says:

NO NO NO NO NO NEVER AGAIN…SHOULD A ANIMAL ABUSER GET A SECOND CHANCE WITH ANY ANIMAL.

MAKE IT ILLEGAL….THEY HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR RIGHT TO OWN A PET! ANIMALS CAN’T TALK BUT IF THEY COULD THEY WOULD DEFINITELY SAY NO TO ANIMAL ABUSERS…PERIOD…WE HAVE TO PROTECT THEM!!!

  4. There already is a national registry of animal abusers, AND we also now have a Federal law against animal abuse. . . IF WE FAIL TO FULLY EMPLOY BOTH, WE ARE AS GUILTY AS THE ABUSERS!!!!!!

WE MUST PROSECUTE EVERY ONE, EVERY TIME!!!!!

  5. Jose Espino says:

Isn’t there something called Ponce’s Law? It may not been adopted in Tennessee yet. And now, do we the people really have to ask lawmakers not to let these convicted animal abusers own pets? Isn’t it like asking that a convicted child molester not be allow around children? I don’t know which is most stupid, the feeling I get from having to suggest such logical suggestion or the lawmakers to whom I’m asking it to?

  6. What is the point of convicting someone for animal abuse if in effect they are allowed to turn around and continue to commit the same crime? Animal abuse laws need teeth and effective enforcement. One obvious way to ensure that animal abusers do not abuse other animals is to prohibit them from owning or having access to pets. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  7. Heather Brophy says:

Sexton, We don’t pay you to be ignorant but to protect all if you can not do your job (letting killers walk) GET THE HELL OUT OF OFFICE NOW! Thank-you.

  8. You have to make it illegal for animal abusers to continue to own animals..If you do not, each animal will be a “practice run” on torturing and abusing the next animal with more sadistic treatment.

  9. How do I get this message to
    My local shelter?

  10. All I can say is “Are you serious?”How does this shit happen?

  11. Nadine Brundage says:

Unbelievable, where the hell is justice for the innocent and The voiceless? Sick of the nut cases out there abusing animals and getting away with it. I’d like to see them all euthanized. Demented trash.

  12. INSTEAD OF TESTING ON ANIMALS IN LABORATORIES, WHICH IS A FORM OF ANIMAL ABUSE, I SAY TAKE KNOWN ANIMAL ABUSERS (AS WELL AS PEDOPHILES AND RAPISTS) AND PERFORM THE TESTING ON THEM !!!!!!!
TO ALLOW ANIMAL ABUSERS TO EVER OWN OR EVEN GO NEAR AN ANIMAL EVER AGAIN IS PURE INSANITY!!!!

  13. Jaime Perez says:

Just shoot animal abusers! They don’t deserve to live.

  14. Anyone who abuses, mistreats, hurts, hits, yells at, starves or abandons an animal should NOT be around animals. They should NOT ever be allowed to own an animal again. They don’t deserve the love and loyalty of a pet. There should never ever be a question or a second thought about this. Their anger issues are way too dangerous for helpless innocent animals.

  15. I can’t believe that there is any question about this. Animal abuse is a symptom of a sadistic personality. Such people should be prohibited from owning or having any control over pets. They should also be prohibited from contact with children, from breeding with other human beings, and from most contact with any other decent people. What are your officials thinking to even entertain letting such demonic individuals own pets??

  16. Agree all comments they dont need this .Torture these animal abusers

  17. AN ABUSER IS A ABUSER-WILL MOST LIKELY ABUSE AND SUFFER THE POOR VOICELESS SOULS AGAIN-THEY NEED TO BE WATCHED AT ALL TIMES.
