Demand More Staff Involvement at Chinese Zoo to Protect Animals from Harm

Target: The Rural Grand View Garden in Shenzhen, China

Goal: Prevent unruly guests from injuring and killing animals by enforcing rules and training staff to be more competent

Zoos are intended to be a safe home for all animals. The staff is there to ensure the safety and well-being of every animal in that sanctuary. Unfortunately, the crocodiles at the The Rural Grand View Garden in Shenzhen, China were not treated with such respect. Eleven crocodiles are now dead after visitors pelted them repeatedly with trash and rocks. The staff didn’t even notice until they went to routinely clean the artificial lake later that day.

According to reports, visitors began taunting the crocodiles because they weren’t entertaining enough. Crocodiles usually enter into a hibernation period during the winter, but the ignorant visitors wanted more action. Several guests began shouting, spitting and throwing whatever they had near them at the crocodiles. Their habitat was contaminated from all of the trash, and the crocodiles suffered fatal injuries from the items being pelted at them. Of the zoo’s crocodile population, only 2 survived.

The visitors and the staff are at fault here. The visitors had no respect for the animals or their habitat. The staff members were ignorant as to what was going on and could have stopped it if they were more attentive. There needs to be more security and protection for the animals, and the visitors need to be educated on how to properly behave. Sign the petition below to end animal cruelty and neglect at the zoo.

Dear Rural Grand View Garden,

We are shocked at the events that have recently taken place at your zoo. Eleven innocent crocodiles are now dead because of neglect. Your staff neglected to protect the crocodiles, and the visitors neglected to attend to the harm being done.

We believe you need to enforce more rules in your facility. The staff needs to be more attentive to the animals and how the visitors are interacting with them. It is usually rare to go to a zoo and not see an employee around, whether they are talking to visitors or caring for the animals. Having a more attentive staff with make the animals feel safer, and it will allow for more control of the guests that come to your zoo.

The visitors are at fault here as well. The way they behaved towards the crocodiles is cruel and unforgivable.  Guests that come to your zoo need to be educated on what will happen if they behave as carelessly as this. Your staff can work to inform visitors on the proper way to act around wildlife.

We are asking you to please increase your facility’s awareness of the animals. Aggressive guests should be removed before these situations can escalate. The animals are there to be protected, not harmed.

  1. This common Asian mentality makes me sick. Boxing orangutans at Indonesian amusement parks or as prostitutes in their brothels, bears existing in small cages for an alleged cheap version of Viagra in China and Japan, extinction of entire species for virility, all kind of animals eaten and skinned alive, live chickens bought on a market and transported in the net of the bike through the streets of Hongkong to ensure the meat is fresh(in times of refrigerators), …
There’s human greed and cruelty everywhere on earth but committing atrocities with that self-evidence to such an extent and social acceptance is something special!

  2. sybil sable says:

close this “zoo” especially to the nasty public.Uncaring people should not be tending animals

  3. I’d like to take actions against ALL OF CHINA! These barbarions live in the past. I thought they were as intelligent and educated as Americans. All I read and see shows they are not. Why would they consider their actions cruel to animals when they treat their own people in such horrible ways? I think they really don’t know better. Why do we trade with them? Our pets are dying because they eat foods and treats that come from there. Let’s put a stop to it.
