Target: England’s Food Standards Agency
Goal: Prosecute two men accused of abusing horses at slaughterhouse
Two men in Cheshire County, England have been accused of horse abuse while working at the Red Lion slaughterhouse. Undercover footage show the men beating, kicking, shocking, and shoving horses in the facility, as well as forcing the animals into pens and stunning them together.
Horses are intelligent animals that have complex social structures and a wide range of emotions. They can sense fear, feel intense pain, and are aware when they are in danger. In many countries, slaughtering these beautiful creatures is illegal. While horse slaughter is permitted in England, there are many laws in place intended to protect these creatures from unnecessary pain and suffering. Slaughterhouse employees cannot hit, kick, or hurt the animals in any way. Plus, because horses are aware when they are in danger, employees can only kill one horse at a time. They can’t, as was done by the men at Red Lion, stun and slaughter them together in one pen.
While these laws are supposed to protect horses in England, slaughterhouse employees obviously do not always follow the rules. Due to their actions, the men at the Red Lion slaughterhouse had their required slaughter licenses revoked and England’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) is investigating the situation. If there is enough damning evidence, the FSA will press charges against the men and force them to stand trial.
Urge the FSA to prosecute these two men. Those working in slaughterhouses in England must understand that all creatures must be respected and animal abuse will not be tolerated.
Dear Food Standards Agency,
Please prosecute the two men accused of abusing horses at the Red Lion slaughterhouse. Their behavior is abhorrent and they should be severely punished.
Footage recorded by the Hillside Animal Sanctuary show the two men participating in several abusive situations. They are seen beating, kicking, and punching horses in the facility, as well as illegally slaughtering two horses at once. This behavior was recorded over an eight week period, clearly demonstrating that these were not one-time incidents.
The two mean of Red Lion must be punished. Their actions cannot be tolerated and others working in slaughterhouses around England must be aware that abusing animals is punishable by law. Again, please prosecute these two men to the fullest extent of the law.
