Target: Bashar Ja’afari, Syrian UN Representative
Goal: Demand that the Syrian government stop targeting civilians while ensuring their humane treatment.
As the conflict in Syria drags on, entire towns have emptied and city neighborhoods have been decimated as Syrian civilians flee the conflict and take refuge outside of Syria. However, for those that remain in Syria–either by choice or circumstance–human rights violations have become an all-too-prevalent feature of the violence. Call upon Syria to protect its citizens regardless of the volatile political situation. Sign the petition demanding that Syria stop targeting civilians and reminding it of its human rights obligations under international law.
A major facet of the Syrian army’s human rights violations against civilians is what Amnesty International terms “indiscriminate air bombardments of heavily populated areas.” The bombardments are often carried out using cluster bombs, which have been banned internationally. According to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, it is a war crime to carry out such wanton attacks against civilians in a non-international conflict.
Furthermore, reports continue to surface of detainees being tortured and/or killed by the Syrian army. Such a flagrant abuse of human rights violates international law and is a slap in the face to the global community as well as the population of Syria.
Tell Syria that the world will not stand for violent injustice, especially on such a large scale. Hold Syria accountable–sign the petition demanding an end to indiscriminate attacks against civilians and reminding Syria of its international human rights obligations.
Dear Representative Ja’afari,
Although Syria is embroiled in an internal conflict, it is still subject to international law. I urge you to use your position as Syria’s representative to the United Nations to call on government officials to immediately cease targeting civilians and to ensure that any and all detainees–rebels or civilians–are treated humanely in accordance with international human rights regulations.
Particularly egregious among Syria’s wartime offenses is its indiscriminate persecution of civilians, many of whom are simply trying to flee the conflict and seek safety. The government’s blatant disregard for international law is evident in its violation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court–which declares the targeting of civilians in a non-international conflict a war crime–and its use of cluster bombs, which are internationally banned.
Furthermore, reports continue to surface of detainees being tortured and/or killed by the Syrian government. Regardless of their combat status, detainees have the right to humane and fair treatment under the law.
Please remind Syria that the entire world community is watching. Do not allow such horrible human rights violations to continue; to do so would benefit no one.
