Support LGBTQ+ History in Schools

Target: Brigadier General Warner I. Sumpter (Ret.), President, Maryland State Board of Education

Goal: Teach students LGBTQ+ history in social studies classes.

Too many states allow public schools to gloss over the attributions of famous LGBTQ+ citizens. Stonewall and the legalization of gay marriage are absent from history books. Maryland is attempting to change this. New legislation in the state is requiring that schools teach LGBTQ+ history. Sign the petition to show support for such an important endeavor.

Nearly 50 delegates and senators have backed this legislation. They argue that only by including LGBTQ+ history in social studies classes can we teach a “complete story of America.”

This action is momentous. Finally, students may be able to see a bit of themselves in their history books. The Maryland Department of Education has yet to make this change official. Sign the petition supporting this new inclusive history curriculum.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Sumpter,

Maryland may become one of the first states in the United States to require that public schools teach LGBTQ+ history in social studies classes. For the first time in their lives, some students may be able to see a bit of themselves in their lessons.

It is so important that education reflect the real world and the real students being taught. I ask that you support this new legislation and make it official.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
