Applaud Pakistan for Peacefully Agreeing to Democratic Reforms

Target: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf

Goal: Applaud Pakistan for peacefully agreeing to electoral reforms and encourage it to continue on this democratic path.

The Arab Spring swept the Middle East and authoritarian governments often resorted to violence to crush street protests. Breaking this trend, the Pakistan government signed an agreement with opposition cleric Tahir-ul Qadri to form a caretaker government, implement electoral reforms and hold free elections. Sign the petition to applaud Pakistan peacefully agreeing to reforms and encourage the nation to continue on a democratic path.

Referring to the march as “Pakistan’s Tahrir Square”, Cleric Qadri was prepared for a four day protest in the capital of Islamabad. Ten to fifteen thousand people marched with the Canadian-Pakistani opposition leader in Islamabad. The government quickly reached out to Qadri, sending a committee of 10 members to negotiate with him. The government agreed to dissolve the National Assembly before March; politicians would be given 90 days to stand for elections. The government also agreed to a caretaker administration selected by all political parties.

The agreement was signed by Qadri and Prime Minister Raja Peravaiz Ashraf, along with high-level government officials from the negotiation team. Qadri has called off the rest of the protests and asked his supporters to peacefully disperse. The agreement may herald a new era of democratic reforms and free elections in Pakistan. Sign the petition to applaud the Pakistani government for agreeing to electoral and democratic reforms and encourage them to continue along this path.

Dear Prime Minister Ashraf,

I am writing as a human rights activist to applaud the agreement signed with Cleric Qadri. Pakistan has been beset by military coups in the past. Civilian governments have often been weak and corrupt, lacking popular support and legitimacy. The result is that strong military leaders have often risen to power with the backing of the population. It is my sincere hope that the agreement signed today represents a new era of democratic reform in Pakistan.

Forming a caretaker government and holding fair and free elections is a positive first step in creating meaningful change in Pakistan. I urge you to continue to be responsive to the demands of the people and wish you well on your democratic endeavor. It is my hope that Pakistan will provide an example of peaceful change to the rest of the world.
