Stop Greece From Replacing Forests with Mines

Target: Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras

Goal: Stop Greece from destroying 420 acres of forest to allow for a new gold mine

Europe has been facing rough economic changes in the past few years, and countries are resorting to extreme measures to find extra revenue. Northern Greece is making way for a gold mine by destroying 420 acres of their forests. Call upon the Greek Prime Minister to prevent this disastrous decision.

The country sees the gold mine as a means to end their recession and extreme debt crisis. The large area being destroyed includes mountains and beaches that are popular vacation spots for locals and tourists. With the gold mine takeover, no one will be able to enjoy the beauty of these once historic locations.

The forests in Greece have remained untouched for hundreds of years. This act of economic desperation is not a viable excuse for the country to destroy their own land. The ecosystem of the area will shift, and the gold mine will bring pollution that could have long lasting affects. Tourism in the country will see a decrease since pristine scenery will be replaced with mines and toxic air.

While the gold mine may bring jobs and money to Greece, the success would be temporary. Greece will stand to permanently lose their historic natural beauty. Tourism will decline, and quality of life for residence will be threatened because of pollution. Sign the petition below to stop Greece from destroying their beautiful country.

Dear Prime Minister Samaras,

The entire world is sympathizing with Greece’s economic difficulties. While we understand your desperation to find a solution, it is unreasonable to destroy your own land for money.

Creating gold mines will be a short-term solution for a long-term problem. You may see jobs increase and an influx of money, but this will be temporary. The pollution and destruction of land will be permanent. Your residents will suffer and tourism to the area will end. Mining is also a very dangerous task, which means workers will face danger every day they go to work.

Greece is a naturally beautiful country with an incredibly large amount of history. It would be a shame to see some of that history destroyed for the opportunity to make a few dollars. Anyone would be lucky to visit your land and to see the beauty in person. We are asking you to please preserve your land and find other means to fixing your economy.
