Target: Governor Andrew Cuomo
Goal: Thank Governor Cuomo and lawmakers for agreeing to expand New York’s ban on assault weapons
Since the gun debate has reopened across the country, many lawmakers are reconsidering current restrictions on guns and assault weapons. New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers came to an agreement to increase weapons restrictions, making New York the first state to implement tougher regulations in light of recent gun violence. Thank Governor Cuomo and New York lawmakers for implementing policies to reduce gun sales and ownership.
New York state senate, in an overwhelming vote of 43 to 18, passed restrictions that tightly regulate gun ownership and minimize the types of weapons available to purchase within state lines. The expanded ban means that semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and military style features will no longer be allowed within the state of New York. Individuals who already own the now banned weapons will be allowed to keep them, but will have to register them with the state.
This bill also changed regulations to prevent mentally ill individuals from owning or handling guns. Mental health professionals will now be required to report to health officials when they believe their patients may want to harm themselves or others. Law enforcement will then be authorized to confiscate any weapons owned by that patient. These regulations are unique in that they allow for confiscation of weapons. In the past, people have been denied a gun license for reasons of mental illness, but these new regulations would allow the police to confiscate weapons, and would extend to patients whom psychologists deem dangerous, but who aren’t registered as mentally ill with the state.
These new regulations are being called the most comprehensive in the country. They will ban gun ammunition that holds more than seven rounds (the previous limit was 10 rounds). Additionally, background checks will now be run when buying ammunition. Thank Governor Andrew Cuomo and lawmakers for taking a tough stance on gun ownership and sales.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
Since the gun debate reopened, there has been much discussion about increasing gun regulations and keeping firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill. While there has been a lot of talk, New York is the first state to create a comprehensive plan to combat gun violence. Thank you and New York lawmakers for increasing gun regulations and ownership within your state.
Since the state senate passed your gun bill in an overwhelming vote, magazines with more than seven rounds will be banned from the state. Additionally, semi-automatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines will be outlawed. Regulating gun ownership by law enforcement and mental health professional will also cut down on violence. Thank you for increasing gun restrictions within New York and setting an example for the rest of the country.
