Reprimand School For Firing Teacher for Being Transgender

Target: New York Unified Court System

Goal: Ensure school officials who fired transgender teacher receive maximum consequences

Mark Krolikowski, or Mr. K as his students called him, was recently fired from St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, New York for being a transgender individual. He has taught at the Catholic school for over 32 years. After being confronted with a complaint about his appearance from the parent of a student, Krolikowski came out as a transgender and also agreed to tone his image down.

He was also told he couldn’t show up to school events. Shortly after he came out, he was fired on the basis that he had not changed his appearance to their liking. He is now suing the school for discrimination and wrongful termination. Demand that Krolikowski be offered his position again, and that the school officials responsible for his termination receive consequences.

Krolikowski always wore a suit and tie, but wore multiple earrings and a French manicure. His appearance complied with school guidelines. This was accepted for over 30 years, until the complaint. His appearance never failed to comply with the school’s dress and grooming code. He never displayed an unprofessional appearance; it’s because he didn’t conform to the perceived manner of how a male is supposed to present himself that he was discriminated against. The lawsuit says that his termination was illegal.

Hoards of students have come together to show support and publicly advocate for Krolikowski. Former students have described him as kind, friendly, and a great teacher who gets students enthusiastic about learning. Kids need good teachers that they can look up to, and Krolikowski is just that.

He is comfortable enough in his own skin not to conform to what society tells him is normal, and that is a lesson that students can learn from him. He never imposed his choice to be transgender on his students, and always acted professional. The tragedy is that Krolikowski was loved by his students for many years, only to be thrown out on to the street because of one close-minded parent complaining. Support Krolokowski’s lawsuit by signing this petition.

Dear New York Unified Court System,

Mr. Mark Krolikowski was recently fired from his teaching job at St. Francis Praparatory School in Queens because he is a transgender individual. Krolikowski has dressed in the same manner since his time there, a suit, earrings and French manicured fingernails. This was accepted until the parent of a student complained. Krolikowski then came out as a transgender, and agreed to tone down his image. He was even told he couldn’t attend school events.

Krolikowsi complied, yet was still fired. He was nothing but an exemplary teacher, and was loved amongst the students. Many of them are actively rallying in support of him.  Please don’t allow the school to get away with firing him just because he didn’t fit their definition of normal. It is a shame to lose a great teacher, and a tragedy to force someone into unemployment after 32 years on the same job. Please see that those responsible receive the maximum consequences.
