Target: Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Goal: Establish Antarctic Ocean as a Marine Protected Area
The Antarctic Ocean is a beautiful, wild continent home to miles of ice and hundreds of wild animals. Penguins, orcas, minke whales, colossal squid, seals, krill, and a multitude of other animals all call the ice and ocean home. Many of these creatures are endangered and find refuge in the quiet areas of the ocean. These creatures need to be protected and thus need our help.
Sadly, the Antarctic is not as pristine as it once was. Ice melt is opening large channels of water that are being exploited by fishing vessels and oil companies. Plastic trash, chemicals, and other harmful substances are being pushed into the habitats of endangered species. Soon, the Antarctic will be just as dirty and devoid of wildlife as other places in the world.
This beautiful ocean cannot become another wild area decimated by over-fishing, oil companies, and piles of trash. Currently, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), the largest activist organization committed to protecting the Antarctic, is considering petitioning world governments to list the entire ocean as a Marine Protected Area (MPA). If the Antarctic Ocean is labeled an MPA, fishing vessels and pollution would be regulated. Oil drilling would either be completely forbidden or majorly curtailed. Endangered animals living on the ice and in the surrounding water would be protected from hunters and whaling companies. Overall, if these regulations were in place, the Antarctic would have a greater chance of remaining a beautiful wilderness teaming with biological diversity.
Urge the CCAMLR to argue for an MPA listing for the Antarctic Ocean.
Dear Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources,
As you know, the Antarctic Ocean is threatened. Climate change and warming temperatures are causing massive ice melt. Trash, hazardous chemicals, and other harmful substances are invading the clear water. Fishing vessels are scooping up thousands of fish that are already over-exploited. Soon, the Antarctic will become another casualty of human greed and expansion.
However, there is something your organization can do to help defend the wildlife and natural wonders of the Antarctic Ocean: petition world governments to list the entire ocean as a Marine Protected Area (MPA). If the ocean does indeed become an MPA, fishing vessels and pollution will be regulated. Marine wildlife will be afforded more protection from hunters and whaling companies. Oil rigs will be forbidden from drilling in and around the ice. With these rules in place, the Antarctic will have a greater chance of remaining a beautiful wilderness.
Please use your power and urge world governments to list the Antarctic Ocean as an MPA. Thank you.
