Save Doomsday Vault Seeds From Environmental Destruction

Target: José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Goal: Preserve the millions of seeds that ensure future agricultural and plant diversity.

The seeds that could save the world in the event of an environmental catastrophe are in serious danger from….environmental catastrophe. Nearly one million seeds comprise the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, also known as the Doomsday Vault. Escalating climate change has now put every one of these potentially life-saving seeds at risk.

The vault, located in an abandoned mine of an Artic archipelago in Norway, hosts the most diverse selection of plant seeds in the world. Contributions have been made from countries around the globe, with the idea of preserving the seeds as back-up in the case of small- or large-scale disasters. The region selected for this global safety deposit box was chosen for its frigid temperatures and permafrost that helps keep the seeds safely stored and viable in the long-term. As global temperatures have risen, however, the security provided by the minus 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures has dissipated. Worse yet, the protective blanket of permafrost has begun to melt, putting the vault in danger of flooding.

The overseers of the vault have already funneled millions of dollars into upgrading the facility, but the threat still looms. Temperatures even in this frosty part of the world are forecasted to rise as much as seven degrees in the coming decades, which could transform concern for the seeds’ prospects into outright alarm. The world cannot afford to lose the crops and plant life that sustain ecosystems and communities worldwide.

Sign this petition to urge the United Nations to take a more active, immediate role in safeguarding the world’s most vital insurance policy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director-General Graziano da Silva,

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations forged a critical partnership to develop the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which in turn has given the world the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. In the event that the worst should ever happen, one could take comfort in knowing the fundamental tools essential for rebuilding were in hand. Now these ‘doomsday seeds’ are facing their own doomsday.

Rising temperatures and the insidious effects of climate change on permafrost continue to chip away at the security of this essential vault. Millions of dollars in renovations will likely not be enough to counter these continuously escalating effects. As Arctic regions of Norway become hotter, the seeds inside the vault not only lose their veil of protection, but they must also combat new threats brought about from flooding, mudslides, and avalanches.

Every day, you make it your mission to fight hunger around the world. One day, these seeds may become your greatest asset and most critical tool in the fight. You must become more hands-on and take action to preserve these seeds now before nature takes the choice out of your hands.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Every country/continent should have its own considering that plants grow often in specific climates only.
