Applaud Chicago for Plan to Encourage Bicycling

Target: Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago

Goal: Commend the city for vowing to create 70 miles of bike lanes before the end of 2015.

The Windy City is working hard to make its streets bike-friendly and encourage more residents to get out and ride their bikes. In 2012, Chicago completed 30 miles of protected bike lanes, but Mayor Emanuel isn’t stopping there. The Mayor has announced the city’s promise to complete another 70 miles before 2015, and a total of 645 miles by 2020. The plan is part of Mayor Emanuel’s vision to make Chicago the most bike-friendly city in the United States. Commend Chicago for creating safe bike lanes and encouraging more people to choose bicycling as their main form of transportation.

The goal of the new ambitious plan is to provide every Chicago resident with access to bike lanes within half a mile from home. Bike lanes will also be increased in areas where they are used most frequently, and will be established in areas where ridership is low. Bike lanes will appeal to all; those who already utilize bike lanes will appreciate the increase in safe paths, while others who do not ride their bikes often will have the confidence to begin bicycling without the fear of unsafe roads. Studies show that 60% of Americans report they would bike more if they felt safer. A rise in the number of people using bicycling as their main form of transportation will lead to a healthier population and environment. Although the 30 miles of bike lanes constructed in 2012 cost approximately $4 million, the mayor is confident it is a small investment for a greater profit. Studies show more accessible bike paths attract a young population and innovative businesses.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mayor Rahm Emanuel,

I would like to show my support for the new plan to create safe bike lanes in Chicago. The new plan will provide every Chicago resident with access to bike lanes within a half-mile from their home. Bike lanes will also be increased in areas where they are used most frequently, and will be established in areas where ridership is low. The new and accessible bike lanes will appeal to a larger crowd. Those who already utilize bike lanes will appreciate the increase in safe paths, while others who do not ride their bikes often will have the confidence to begin bicycling without the fear of unsafe roads. The new bike lanes will lead to a raise in the amount of people who use bicycling as their main form of transportation, which will then lead to a healthier population and cleaner environment.

Thank you for implementing the plan to create 70 miles of safe bike lanes by 2015 and a total of 645 miles by 2020, and taking action to encourage more people to begin choosing a cleaner form of transportation.

Sincerely,
