Prevent Ohio School Employees from Possessing Firearms on the Job

Keep guns from entering Ohio schools.

Target: Jamie Grime, superintendent of Ohio’s Montpelier Village school district

Goal: Prevent school employees from arming themselves with guns.

The Montpelier Village school district in Western Ohio is currently planning on arming several employees at various schools with firearms to be carried while on the job. It is speculated that the employees are school janitors, although this has not been confirmed. It has been confirmed, though, that the employees will take a weapons safety course and bring in their own firearms; even still, this is not enough reason to allow more guns to be allowed near schools, and thus this plan needs to be stopped. Sign this petition and tell Superintendent Grime to end this dangerous plan.

Community reaction in the area was somewhat mixed, as many residents believed guns had no place near schools while others believed that, in light of recent events, school employees needed to arm themselves in case of another emergency situation.

Having guns anywhere near schools creates an element of danger, as the possibility exists for tragedy to occur. Obviously, nearly all of the shootings that occur at schools are done by those who are not in a healthy state of mind, and in this case the guns would be possessed by trained school employees. But having them anywhere near the schools still leaves open the chance that something terrible could happen.

It also creates a climate of fear: fear, among the students and faculty of the schools, that danger surrounds them. It also relays the message that the danger simply needs to be “controlled” or “managed,” rather than prevented. And even on the off chance that a school shooting does occur at an institution employing an armed employee, who is to say that they would even be able to stop it? A school campus is a large place, and one armed guard cannot cover the entirety of it. It is far more likely that the possession of guns by school employees will have negative consequences than positive ones. Therefore, the Montpelier school district should put a stop to this plan before they move forward with it.

Sign this petition and call upon Superintendent Grime to put an end to this potentially disastrous plan.

PETITION LETTER:

Superintendent Grime,

Your school district is currently in the process of arming more people on school campuses and getting guns closer to locations where they could cause the most destruction. This is the opposite of what should be occurring.

When it comes to guns, you need to institute preventative measures that create an environment where guns cannot possibly cause any damage to your schools. Your plan is an example of an effort to “control” or “manage” the potential damaging effect of guns, and this is not good enough.

This is not the place to argue about the possession of guns in society. However, it is a relevant platform to discuss the possession of guns in schools, and the sensible answer is that they do not belong anywhere near them–no matter who is doing the possessing. Stop this plan from being enacted before even more of them enter your schools.

Sincerely,
