Target: Bud Selig, Commissioner, Michael Weiner, Executive Director
Goal: To commend Major League Baseball for agreeing to random steroids testing.
Major League Baseball and the Players Union must be commended for their recent agreement to test for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) during the regular-season. The random blood tests will also search for other banned substances in an effort to curb the doping epidemic in the game. The testing program calls for a World Anti-Doping Agency-certified lab in Montreal to establish testosterone readings for all players. The move comes on the heels of the Baseball Writers of America Association’s decision to not select any player to the baseball hall of fame. The players included Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, both of whom are tied to the “Steroids Era”.
Federal law prohibits the use of human growth hormone unless a doctor prescribes it, according to the Justice Department. The department says that the misuse of these drugs can lead to a wide range of side affects such as cardiovascular disease, enlargement of the heart and development of polyps in the colon. Athletes use the drug in order to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass. Many doctors also state that HGH will decrease the recovery time needed for athletes to return from an injury.
This is not the first time that the MLB has said they would test for HGH randomly but the previous agreement did not allow for blood tests during the regular season. By allowing for such tests the MLB is stating that they will no longer stand for a continuation of the steroids era that has denigrated the integrity of the game. Sign this petition to commend the actions taken by MLB leadership to end the steroids epidemic in baseball.
Dear Bud Selig and Michael Weiner,
Thank you for passing an agreement to test for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) during the regular season. By allowing for random blood tests, baseball may begin to curb the doping epidemic that has ravaged the game for the past few decades. Establishing labs that set up testosterone readings for all players in baseball is another important step towards reestablishing legitimacy to the sport.
I hope that these steps will begin the healing process for fans and usher in a new era for the game. The move made today will no doubt do much to reestablish fans respect for the players. Thank you for doing what you can to save the integrity of baseball.
