Protect Whales and Dolphins From Dangerous Seismic Blasting

Target: Ryan Zinke, Secretary of U.S. Department of the Interior

Goal: Protect vulnerable whales and dolphins from damaging seismic blasts.

President Trump has placed thousands of vulnerable dolphins and whales at risk by approving exploratory oil drilling in the ocean for the first time in more than half a century. In 2016, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke proposed a new plan that would open up 90% of United States coastal waters to oil exploration by 2019. President Trump has taken the first step in this plan by approving seismic blasting off the Atlantic coast. On November 30, 2018, President Trump approved five companies’ exploratory seismic blasting in the Atlantic to search for oil deposits under the sea floor.

As soon as next year, seismic air guns could hammer the ocean floor with massive explosions that are more than 250 decibels and heard for miles. These blasts can injure, deafen, and kill thousands of marine mammals like whales, dolphins, and other threatened sea life. To make this all seem above-board and reduce the responsibility of these oil companies, the National Marine Fisheries Service plans to issue “incidental take” permits, which allow companies to legally harm wildlife during the process of seismic blasting with no repercussions.

At least a dozen governors in states along the East Coast are strongly opposed to the administration’s proposal to expand federal oil and gas leases to the Atlantic. In addition to harming vulnerable marine mammals, the oil exploration threatens beach tourism, a large part of the economy for coastal states.

Seismic blasting is just the first step. Seismic blasting estimates the location of oil and gas, but exploratory drilling confirms the presence. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill that destroyed the Gulf of Mexico resulted from exploratory drilling. After this administration has injured or killed the marine life of the Atlantic coast, it would like us to risk an oil spill in our waters to appease Big Oil. Tell Secretary Zinke that we won’t stand for this. Sign this petition to protect vulnerable whales and dolphins from seismic blasting.

PETITION LETTER:

Secretary Zinke,

Your plan to open 90% of the US coast to oil drilling by 2019 is not acceptable. President Trump recently approved seismic blasting, as part of your plan, in the Atlantic Ocean. Seismic blasting can injure, deafen, and kill thousands of marine mammals like whales, dolphins, and other threatened sea life. In addition to harming marine life, oil exploration will negatively affect coastal communities and beach tourism.

When President Trump approved seismic blasting by five companies to search for oil in the Atlantic, he approved the deaths of thousands of creatures. When you stood by this decision, you approved a future oil spill in our waters that will destroy our marine life and cripple our coastal economies.

We demand that vulnerable whales and dolphins be protected. Stop seismic blasting off the Atlantic coast.

Sincerely,

  1. This is seriously harmful to marine life and it must be stopped now. Sad.
