Shut Down Reindeer Farm With Reported History of Abuse

Target: The Right Honourable Michael Gove, Minister for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs in the United Kingdom

Goal: Shut down allegedly abusive Reindeer Centre and find sanctuaries for the reindeer.

The abuse of several reindeer has been reported at the Reindeer Centre near Ashford in the United Kingdom. Video evidence recorded by Animal Aide shows employees at the facility allegedly dragging reindeer by their necks with rope and then kicking them in their abdomens. The videos reportedly display coordinated and intentional violence against these harmless animals. Despite their mythical reputation, reindeer are sensitive animals whose bodies are not able to withstand serious impact. The Reindeer Centre claims to have fired the employees who were filmed reportedly attacking reindeer, but animal rights groups claim that abuse continues at the center and reindeer facilities across the United Kingdom.

As the holiday season continues, more and more reindeer will be rented out by facilities like the Reindeer Centre, the Blithbury Reindeer Lodge, and the Cheshire Reindeer Lodge to allegedly unscrupulous organizations who cannot be trusted with them. One reindeer discovered by animal rights activists at the Blithbury Reindeer Lodge was reportedly found bowlegged with “severe fur loss” and had to be euthanized soon after. Reindeer are sensitive and wild animals with no place at a Christmas or other winter holiday festival, where they will be paraded around by handlers without the necessary training.

Please sign this petition to demand the complete shutdown of the Reindeer Centre. Only by punishing those institutions that reportedly harm reindeer can we begin to end their systematic abuse during the holiday season.

Dear Minister Gove,

Video evidence reportedly shows employees at the Reindeer Centre intentionally attacking the reindeer in their care. The Animal Aid recordings reportedly show the reindeer forced into their pens and kicked ruthlessly in the abdomen. Although the video has gone viral and prompted the removal of the alleged offending employees, the Reindeer Centre claims no responsibility for the reported reindeer abuse and continues to operate.

Although official reports are mixed, animal rights activists claim that there is continued reindeer abuse and neglect at the Reindeer Centre and other facilities across the United Kingdom. Animal Aide points out the Blithbury Reindeer Lodge, the Cheshire Reindeer Lodge, and the Reindeer Centre in particular. Video evidence from these sites reportedly shows thin unhealthy animals living in squalid conditions. With the continuing holiday season, the plight of these helpless animals will only increase as they are rented out to department stores and holiday festivals, where they may be mistreated by people with no experience in reindeer handling.

I demand that you shut down the Reindeer Centre and begin a precedence towards the protection, not the exploitation, of the reindeer of the United Kingdom. If you hold the Reindeer Centre as an example, we can move towards a world in which other reindeer farms cannot get away with animal abuse.
