Tell China to Stop Consuming Endangered Salamander

Target: Mr. Zhou Shengxian, Minister of Environmental Protection for the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Enforce laws against illegal poaching of endangered salamander for food

The Chinese giant salamander is one of many endangered animals that suffer the fate of ending up on a plate. The largest living salamander species, the Chinese giant salamander is endemic to southern China. The salamander is considered a delicacy in China and Taiwan, and overhunting has caused its once abundant population to land on the endangered species list. Despite it being listed as a protected species it is still illegally sold for human consumption, typically used in a soup. Tell China to crack down on the illegal poaching of the Chinese giant salamander and to enforce strict punishment on anyone who sells it for food.

This aquatic species can live decades in the wild. Unfortunately, many of them don’t get a chance to live more than a few years. Not only is it the largest salamander in the world, but it’s the largest amphibian too, able to reach up to five feet in length. The Chinese giant salamander is now extremely rare to find in the wild. Though there are a small number of the species in captivity, there isn’t much hope for them to be able to breed enough to recover their population.

For an animal to be on the brink of extinction is already a critical issue.  However, it’s simply unacceptable when it’s because of humans overhunting them for use as a delicacy. Other species suffer extinction due to habitat loss, fragmentation, invasive species, predation and pollution. The solution for this is much simpler. This species can be saved if people stop hunting it. Poachers need to be prevented from reaching this species, and people who choose to consume the salamander need to face serious consequences. This species has been around for millions of years, and humans shouldn’t get to just drive it out because it goes good in their soup. Tell China to strictly enforce the law that renders it illegal to hunt the Chinese giant salamander, and to make the effort to penalize anyone who is still selling it.

Dear Mr. Zhou Shengxian,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Chinese giant salamander. This species is native only to certain regions of China. It was once an abundant species, but has been overhunted to critical numbers. The salamanders that are hunted are used for food.

The slaying of this endangered species for human consumption is irresponsible. This particular species has been around for longer than humans, and we should not be allowed to determine its fate. This is a problem that has a definite solution. Poachers need to be prevented from accessing the Chinese giant salamander. Officials need to crack down and shut down the operation of anyone illegally selling this animal. Those who sell it and purchase it need to face serious penalties. Please, prevent these salamanders that have been around for millions of years from going extinct because of human consumption.
