Praise Cancellation of Racist Performance

Target: Alain Simard, Manager and Founder of the Montreal International Jazz Festival

Goal: Thank Montreal jazz festival for cancelling racially insensitive performance.

The Montreal International Jazz Festival has cancelled the controversial stage show “SLAV.” The performance consisted of mostly white performers parading as black slaves, singing African-American songs, and was heavily criticized and jeered for what many considered cultural appropriation. The few black performers involved were reportedly appalled by the material and its delivery.

The festival made the right choice in cancelling this show. While Canada’s racist tendencies may not be as blatant as those of the United States, they are still an issue, and whether or not it meant to be, “SLAV” was insensitive and offensive. The use of white actors was essentially blackface, a performance trend that has been heavily criticized on its own and considered racist and insensitive for decades.

With the rise in social and political racism over the years, entertainment venues must be more mindful of the content they produce and how they choose to represent such ideas. Sign this petition to thank those in charge of the festival for cancelling this insensitive performance.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Simard,

Thank you for cancelling further performances of the stage show “SLAV.” The production’s use of mostly white actors was racially insensitive and considered cultural appropriation by many black festival-goers and audience members. With the amount of social and political racism in North America in the past few years, a performance that was essentially blackface only fans the flames of hatred and hurt feelings.

It is important for entertainment venues to think carefully about the content they produce when it comes to such sensitive issues as race and slavery. The Montreal International Jazz Festival did the right thing by cancelling this show and refunding the ticket prices, thus preventing any further backlash and anger.

Sincerely,
