Don’t Sentence Rescued Baby Goat to Death

Target: David A. Mahoney, Sheriff, Transylvania County, North Carolina

Goal: Call off police hunt that would send rescued baby goat to slaughter.

An innocent baby goat who was rescued from a meat farm may be returned to the slaughter as North Carolina police conduct a statewide hunt. The baby goat, a male named Rain, had pneumonia when he was rescued by Wayne Hsiung, founder of the animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). He says his rescue of Rain was “part of an investigation into ‘humane’ animal agriculture,” and though he is now faced with felony charges for his actions, “that’s nothing compared to the fate that Rain will have if the police take him back to be slaughtered.”

Police are also threatening Rain’s animal caretakers with felony charges if they do not cooperate and turn the baby goat over to be killed. As Hsiung says regarding Rain’s situation, “His life and story are a sore spot for an industry that makes billions of dollars from lying to the public about the actual conditions of animal slaughter. Now they’re visiting animal sanctuaries and threatening to send working mothers to prison for simply caring for a sick baby!” Additionally, Hsiung points out that these slaughterhouses often kill in especially cruel ways, like tearing animals to pieces while they are still alive. Sign below to demand that this ridiculous and inhumane hunt be called off, and that Rain and his caretakers be allowed to live in peace.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Mahoney,

The statewide police hunt for Rain the baby goat must be called off. This innocent baby animal was rescued and his life saved—from illness and from slaughter. It is inhumane, cruel, and unnecessary to rip Rain away from his caretakers and family and return him to be killed. It is also unjust to threaten the people taking care of him, who are simply giving a helpless baby animal a better life, with felony charges.

As Wayne Hsiung, founder of the animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), states, “Rain was suffering from pneumonia when we rescued him from a goat meat farm as part of an investigation into “humane” animal agriculture. His life and story are a sore spot for an industry that makes billions of dollars from lying to the public about the actual conditions of animal slaughter. Now they’re visiting animal sanctuaries and threatening to send working mothers to prison for simply caring for a sick baby!” He notes that the type of USDA meat farms that animals like Rain are typically sent to often kill cruelly, tearing live animals to pieces. No animal deserves this fate, especially not a baby goat who would be ripped away from a peaceful and happy life. I urge you to save Rain’s life and stop this inhumane and unnecessary police hunt.

Sincerely,

  2. What is the decent, humane and compassionate thing to do? A baby goat??? There should be no question. Don’t abandon him to be killed in some cruel backyard slaughter outfit that does not use “humane” slaughter methods. This baby needs care, not barbaric treatment.
