Allow Track and Field Athletes to Compete Without Hormone Modification

Target: Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations

Goal: Don’t forbid women athletes from competing based on their hormones.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has created a rule that states female runners with high testosterone must reduce those levels or they will not be allowed in international races between 400m and the mile. This rule is to take effect as of November 1, 2018. Not only is this rule asking women to change their natural hormone balances; it is also very limited and only applies to female athletes in certain events. The rule seems to affect only one professional track and field athlete: Caster Semenya.

Semenya is the reigning Olympic 800m champion. She also has naturally high levels of testosterone. Semenya underwent gender testing in 2009 and is expected to be affected by this new ruling on testosterone level. She has called the rule “discriminatory, irrational, and unjustifiable.” Semenya has never been accused of doping or cheating; her hormone levels are all natural.

Semenya said, “I am very upset that I have been pushed into the public spotlight again. I don’t like talking about this new rule. I just want to run naturally, the way I was born. It is not fair that I am told I must change. It is not fair that people question who I am. I am Mokgadi Caster Semenya. I am a woman and I am fast.”

Sign this petition to urge the IAAF to repeal the rule that limits women’s natural testosterone levels in middle-distance races.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Coe,

The recent IAAF rule that is to come into effect on November 1, 2018 regarding women’s testosterone levels is discriminatory toward variations in women’s natural hormone makeup. Furthermore, the rule itself is very limited, applying only to female athletes and only middle distance runners, seeming to be created to specifically limit the Olympic 800m champion, Caster Semenya.

Women like Semenya have earned the right to compete and have proven themselves to be natural athletes deserving of equal rights and respect. I urge you to repeal this rule and allow athletes to compete in their natural state.

Sincerely,
