Protect the Free Speech of Student Journalists

Target: Senator Ron Richard, President pro tem of the Missouri State Senate

Goal: Protect student journalists and their freedom of speech.

Student journalists have no protection when it comes to their freedom of speech. In Missouri, a law that would have granted student journalists the same liberties and freedoms of professional journalists failed to pass for the third year in a row.

The Cronkite New Voice Act would protect high school and college reporters from being punished for editorial content. It is similar to protections for professional journalists, protections that make the United States an icon for freedom of speech and press.

While similar laws have passed in Washington, and are up for a vote in New Jersey and New York, the students of Missouri must once again wait for their state’s congress to act. Sign the petition to demand the Missouri state senate vote on this bill and protect the freedoms of student journalists.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Richard,

For the third year, the senate has failed to vote on a law that would protect student journalists. The Cronkite New Values Act would offer the same protections professional journalists have to student writers.

As we have seen through many past events, including the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, student journalists have power to enact change. They deserve to be treated with the same protections and freedoms professional journalists share. Act now to ensure this bill becomes law once and for all.

Sincerely,
