Don’t Let Trump Weaponize Space

Target: General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Goal: Prevent formation of a sixth military branch focused on space warfare.

President Trump is at it again with his unpredictable impulses. He now proposes the formation of a sixth branch of the military, the Space Force. What sounds like a farce could actually set a dangerous precedent for the use of space for warfare.

At a recent meeting of the National Space Council, President Trump reaffirmed previous statements calling for the creation of military force in space. This time, he has called on the Department of Defense and the Pentagon to begin creation of such a force. However, in his typical fashion, he gave no indication of the actual objectives of such a force, nor did he indicate how such a complicated and costly undertaking might be accomplished. The U.S. is in fact a signatory of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which calls for only peaceful missions to celestial bodies and absolutely no placement of weapons of mass destruction in space. He has simply used his standard blanket justification of national security that he uses for many of his policies, from his dirty energy policies to the appalling treatment of immigrants in detention facilities. Not only that, but he attempted to reassure the Air Force, a major opponent of the move, that the Air Force and Space Force would be “separate but equal.” Even when speaking on a completely unrelated topic, he manages to squeeze in divisive bigotry, calling to mind segregation.

Trump maintains that, “it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space.” This is an alarming stance to take in an arena where there is not justification for bolstering national security. What the move could do, however, is lead other nations to place weapons in space, creating another venue for mutually-assured destruction where weapons could be launched at any point on the globe with no means for detection. This newest whim could have serious repercussions on a global stage. Sign the petition to add your voice to the opposition of the weaponization of space.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear General Dunford,

The recent directive by President Trump to begin the process of forming the Space Force is alarming. Although this comes as no surprise, with Trump’s previous mentions of such an organization, his dangerous impulse could now come to fruition.

Space is not a battlefield. We signed a treaty saying so. The United States is a signatory of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty to prevent the use of space for warfare. Breaking this agreement would set a dangerous precedent that would lead other nations to do the same for their own defense. Not only that, but the creation of a sixth military branch would take personnel, resources, and budget away from the remaining branches. That seems like a more pressing national security issue than claiming space as our own.

Children and adults alike look to space with wonder at the grand scale of possibilities. Space should be a place for exploration, not some asset for the United States military. Please, do all in your power to prevent this antagonistic move that could start the ball rolling on the weaponization of space by many nations.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
