Punish Grandmother Accused of Confining Children to Dog Kennels

Target: Herbert Slatery III, Attorney General of Tennessee

Goal: Punish woman charged with endangerment of grandchildren while driving.

A Memphis woman was allegedly caught on video with her two grandchildren confined in dog kennels in the back of a car, in 95-degree weather. According to reports, the children claimed they were placed in the kennels due to there being no room in the back of the car, along with no vents to keep them cool. Leimome Cheeks alleges that she checked on the children periodically during the 35-minute drive.

According to her neighbors, Cheeks has always been a kind and loving grandmother, and she likely did not realize she was doing anything wrong. It has been suggested that perhaps she needs care for an unknown mental illness. This does not excuse her alleged reckless endangerment of the two children, however; regardless of her intentions or thought process, the children were in danger of severe heat stroke or dehydration, perhaps even death had the ride been longer. It is extremely fortunate that the children were in good condition when the police caught Cheeks.

Cheeks was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment of children, and has yet to appear in court. Regardless of intention, this woman allegedly committed a dangerous crime and must face justice, in addition to receiving mental help if need be. Sign this petition to ensure Cheeks is properly punished if found guilty.

Dear Attorney General Slatery,

Memphis grandmother Leimome Cheeks was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment after a viral video allegedly caught her driving around with two children locked in dog kennels. According to the children, they were in the kennels due to a lack of space and air vents in the back seat of the car, and their grandmother periodically checked in on them. Neighbors claim Cheeks may have been experiencing an episode of mental illness, as her alleged actions did not line up with how well she normally treats her grandchildren.

Regardless of reasoning, she has allegedly committed a crime. It is extremely fortunate that the children survived the ride and were in good condition when found by the police; had the ride been longer than 35 minutes, they could have faced dehydration or even death. Cheeks must face justice and possibly be placed under the care of a mental health professional. Please ensure that she is properly penalized if found guilty.
