End Violence and Threats Against Journalists

Target: Beji Caid Essebsi, President of Tunisia

Goal: Protect the rights and lives of journalists from police union power.

Journalists in Tunisia are facing brutal violence at the hands of police unions. Police are required to protect journalists, as any attack on a journalist that infringes on freedom of speech is illegal. However, some police are doing little to enforce this law, and are actually going against it themselves.

Police have lashed out against journalists. They have threatened them online and in person and have faced no punishment. In fact, a proposed law may shield them from punishment now and in the future.

Journalists have been harassed and detained by a growing police power. This is a danger to freedom of the press. Sign the petition to demand violence against journalists be brought to an end and the proposed law that would protect police violence not be passed.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Essebsi,

Journalists in your nation face danger. They’re abused, harassed, threatened, and even detained by police forces, although these police forces are intended to protect journalists.

Harming a member of your nation’s media is a crime punishable by jail time. Your police force cannot and should not escape this punishment. I demand the violence against journalists be brought to an end and the proposed legislation that would protect their crimes be withdrawn.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
