Justice For Woman Jailed For Not Having ID

Target: Susana Martinez, Governor of New Mexico

Goal: Pardon woman who was jailed for not having an ID.

A woman in New Mexico spent Thanksgiving and Christmas in jail because someone stole her identity and she was refused access to a lawyer, despite her several requests to the city and county. Joy Morales was an average American living her life, when she had her identity stolen just before the holiday season, after which she was falsely arrested at a traffic stop on a warrant for a crime she didn’t commit. Morales had her identity stolen by an Arizona woman who accrued a DUI warrant in the state of Arizona and was taken into custody under this warrant. The officers involved could have simply compared booking photos or investigated the identity theft, instead, they locked Morales in jail.

Nobody should have to spend the holiday season locked up behind bars, begging for an attorney. Yet Joy Morales was held for weeks before she was ever heard out and released. The state of New Mexico has wrongly imprisoned a woman, wasted precious taxpayer money, and has offered no apology or explanation for their actions. Their behavior is avoidable and inexcusable. Sign this petition below to demand a full pardoning of Joy Morales.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Gov. Martinez,

Joy Morales is as innocent of a citizen as you can get, her only crime was being the victim of identity theft. Nobody should be arrested for a crime they didn’t commit and nobody should have to spend the holidays in jail without even so much as a phone call to a lawyer.

The treatment of Ms. Morales by the state is heinous and needs to be investigated at once. We demand a full pardon of Joy Morales and an investigation into the arresting precinct.

Sincerely,
