Stop Ignoring the Civil Rights of America’s Students

Target: Betsy DeVos, Secretary of the United States Department of Education

Goal: Stop dismissing educational civil rights complaints.

Students who are being discriminated against are being ignored. In American schools, students have the right to the materials and environment deemed necessary for them to learn. For example, blind students need accessible textbooks and girls and boys should have equal access to gymnasiums. When expectations aren’t met in schools, one can file a civil rights complaint to the Department of Education. Over the past several years, thousands of complaints have found their way to the department, whose secretary is currently Betsy DeVos.

In a recent effort to manage the backlogged complaints, DeVos announced a plan to dismiss any case that is deemed “an unreasonable burden” on the department. This resulted in the department dismissing cases filed by the same person or group, which is a meaningful tactic often used to track patterns of violations.

The civil rights complaints that have been filed should all be reviewed by the department to ensure that all students have the materials and environment they need to access a meaningful education. Sign this petition to urge DeVos to stop dismissing educational civil rights complaints.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary DeVos,

All children have the right to access an education. This means that, in some cases, students will need special materials. It also means that students should not have to face harassment or discrimination at school. When these expectations aren’t met, individuals file a civil rights complaint with the Department of Education.

It is an insult to the students you are serving to dismiss these complaints. Although the department might receive many complaints, they all deserve to be seriously reviewed. The sheer number should be seen as an issue in and of itself as opposed to a problem that can simply be dismissed. I urge you to stop dismissing educational civil rights complaints.

Sincerely,

stop it! the answer is to end mandatory education and let people decide if they want to homeschool or not.
