Stop Cruel, Illegal Killing of Black Bears

Target: Joe Stohr, Acting Director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

Goal: Stop allowing brutal methods of killing black bears on private commercial timberland.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife permits black bears to be killed in cruel, painful ways on certain areas of timberland, despite sanctions voted into law by the state’s citizens banning these barbaric methods. The Center for Biological Diversity has brought a lawsuit against the department for its program authorizing this cruelty, which has resulted in the inhumane deaths of approximately 900 black bears since 2010. Center for Biological Diversity biologist and attorney Collette Adkins stated, “It’s so sad that Washington’s bears continue to be killed by barbaric methods banned by the state’s voters. State wildlife officials need to stop this illegal program that allows a small group of hunters to shoot bears over bait, chase them with hounds and catch them in traps.”

The sanctions banning these heartless methods of slaughter make limited exceptions in cases where bears cause property damage. Industrial forests often lack other sources of food, so hungry bears emerging from hibernation peel the bark from trees to eat sapwood. As the Center points out, however, there is no evidence that the bears being killed in these commercial timberlands by this program are damaging trees at all. These brutal killings do not, therefore, fall within the limits of these exceptions. In fact, the department has done nothing more than create a private hunting season for hunters it favors, using methods voters have outlawed. This must not be allowed to continue. Sign below to demand that this inhumane program be terminated immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Stohr,

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department’s program allowing cruel and inhumane methods of killing black bears on private commercial timberland must be put to an end. The practice defies the laws of the state, which ban the use of baits, hounds, and traps. As the Center for Biological Diversity points out in its lawsuit, the program does not fall under the exceptions to those sanctions, as there is no evidence that the hundreds of bears killed in this program were damaging property.

As Collette Adkins of the Center for Biological Diversity states, “In passing initiatives to ban these heartless hunting practices, voters said clearly that inhumane bear-hunting methods aren’t acceptable in Washington. The fish and wildlife department’s bear-killing program is cruel, ineffective and ecologically harmful. We need to stop it.” I urge you to end this cruelty. Please ensure that it is no longer permitted to kill black bears using these inhumane methods anywhere in Washington.

Sincerely,
