Release Animals From Allegedly Abusive Sunrise Farms

Target: Ken Savano, Chief of Police, Petaluma Police Department

Goal: Ensure that chickens being allegedly mistreated at Sunrise Farms are released and given veterinary care.

Over 500 activists staged a sit-in and vigil in an industrial shed at Sunrise Farms in Petaluma, CA, to protest the egg supplier’s alleged treatment of its hens and to try and save the sick animals. The grassroots animal rights organization, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), cited disturbing undercover footage of allegedly rotting chickens at Sunrise Farms, which supplies cage-free eggs to Amazon and Whole Foods. DxE activists were only able to rescue 37 of the chickens, and 40 of the activists were arrested for their peaceful protest.

Activists went into the shed to document the shameful conditions and to demand that the allegedly sick and injured animals be brought to a shelter. They claimed that they were not breaking the law by entering the industrial sheds, as per a criminal law scholar’s legal opinion, but authorities disagreed, resulting in the arrests. According to DxE co-founder Wayne Hsiung, the mass open rescue was necessary to chip away at the power and corruption of the government and corporations like Amazon when it comes to animal cruelty. He stated, “When Americans see what’s happening behind the doors of factory farms, they know it’s against their values. But as long as corporations control our food system, including sending whistleblowers to prison, we won’t have a food system with integrity.” He also said, “When we have gone to authorities or corporations like Amazon with absolutely horrific footage of cruelty, no action has been taken.” Sign below to demand action, and the transfer of all of Sunrise Farms’ chickens to a shelter where they can be properly cared for.

Dear Chief Savano,

Activists staged a sit-in at Sunrise Farms to take action against the alleged abuse of the animals there, citing undercover video footage of deplorable conditions and allegedly rotting hens. Following the mass open rescue, 37 chickens were taken to receive veterinary care, but the rest still remain, and this is unacceptable.

Sunrise Farms provides cage-free eggs to corporations like Amazon, which has done nothing to remedy the animal cruelty despite the video evidence provided by Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). As DxE lead investigator Priya Sawhney says, “These birds are living creatures, not things, but Amazon and other major retailers treat them like commodities. Whether it’s foie gras, fur, or factory farms, Amazon is shipping cruelty into millions of households across the world.” This must not be allowed to continue under your jurisdiction. I urge you to ensure that the rest of the animals at Sunrise Farms are removed and taken to a shelter where they can recover and be cared for as they deserve.

  1. The only TRUE way to prevent animal abuse is by refusing to engage in any way with the dairy and egg industries–GO VEGAN!

  3. Shame on these corrupt, repulsive, animal hating American oinker pig cops who don’t care less about animal welfare.I wish these bastard scumbags at the egg/chicken farm and the cops who only care about themselves a short and painful life.
