End Child Slavery in the Fields of Paraguay

Target: Horacio Cartes, President of Paraguay

Goal: Bring an end to the centuries-old practice of criadazgo, or child slavery, in Paraguay.

Child slavery is rampant in Paraguay. Despite laws, children under 18 are forced to work in agricultural fields, toil in mines, work as domestic help, go out in rivers and oceans as fishermen, and more. Their lives are put in danger every day.

These children often belong to the nation’s poorest families. In return for shelter, food, and education, these children are expected to work for the nation’s wealthier families. While this practice, called criadazgo, may seem like a compromise, it is nothing short of slavery.

Nearly 50,000 children across the country are subjected to this treatment, most of them young girls. Sign the petition to demand this dangerous and deadly exploitation be brought to an end.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Cartes,

Nearly 50,000 young children in your nation, representing your country’s poorest citizens, are forced to toil in fields, mines, factories, and other dangerous environments. This practice, known as criadazgo, can also be defined by another term: slavery.

Children shouldn’t have to be exploited just to have a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. I demand action be taken now to protect these children and bring criadazgo to a definite end once and for all.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
