Urge Germany to Continue Open-Door Policy for Refugees

Target: Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany

Goal: Continue Germany’s open-door policy towards refugees.

About 5,000 Alternative for Germany (AfD) supporters marched through Berlin on Sunday, May 25, 2018. These members of a far-right political group are reportedly anti-immigration, anti-European Union, and anti-Muslim. Despite the show of conservative-leaning Germans, the AfD supporters were outnumbered by about 20,000 anti-AfD demonstrations, including one supported by Berlin’s club scene, which blasted techno music across the capital during the protests.

AfD leader Alexander Gauland said, “Our children, our country, our future: that is why we are here, and we are the only party with this program.” The AfD party gained political momentum in Germany after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 2015 decision to open German borders to more than a million refugees.

Counter-protestors who were blasting techno music said, “We want to be loud enough to drown out the racist speeches.”

Sign this petition to encourage Chancellor Merkel to continue her open-door policy towards refugees.

Dear Chancellor Merkel,

Since 2015, you have had an open-door policy towards refugees. By helping people who are in desperate situations, you have encountered some pushback from conservative, pro-German political parties like Alternative for Germany. This past weekend, the AfD demonstrated by marching through Berlin, pushing their conservative anti-immigration agenda.

However, 20,000 more liberal counter-protestors who support your political move to aid the refugees met the 5,000 AfD demonstrators. This shows that your policies are in line with the majority of Germans, and I encourage you to continue your open-door policy towards refugees.
